Kell grew up around music, but fell in love with it when he began learning drums at the age of 12. What started as a hobby to join in with his musically inclined friends quickly developed into something much more.
Kell began playing at school concerts, forming bands with classmates, and began gigging at local venues at 16.
After finishing secondary school, he went to Hertfordshire College of Music to attain his RSL Level 3 Diploma for Music Practitioners. Encouraged and inspired by his tutors and outstanding final grade, Kell decided to audition for a full time course at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance.
Cheered on by mentor John Shearer (drummer for Steve Hackett, Moon), Kell landed a place on the course with a performance of Tool’s ‘Pushit’. In his studies, he was fortunate enough to study under some fantastic players and tutors, including Gabor Dornyei and Richard Spaven.
ICMP and the scene surrounding it is also where he met many of the artists and musicians he plays with to this day, such as Vincent Bugozi, Them Bloody Kids, and Tee Peters.
It’s in no small part because of this creative network that Kell has enjoyed the performance opportunities he has. Some recent examples include performances abroad in Sweden and Italy, as well as at festivals like Love Supreme and Titan.
During his second year of study, Kell began teaching as a way to make ends meet. That changed when he realized the value of sharing knowledge and helping others improve at their instrument. While he still performs regularly, teaching now makes up the bulk of Kell’s professional life, and he couldn’t be happier about it.
Using the expertise garnered from these experiences, Kell brings an excellent technical understanding of drumming and a deep peripheral knowledge of the world that it inhabits: gigs, touring, recording, teaching, and the world of contemporary music as a whole.
