Indonesian drummer Kalonica Nicx, is featured as the main soloist for the Moon Orchid Sinfonietta for Drum Set and Orchestra.
The orchestral work is Australian composer Gerry Joe Weise’s 7th Sinfonietta, and was recorded by the Byron Bay Youth Orchestra with an extensive percussion section (tubular bells, glockenspiel, hand bells, timpani, vibraphone, marimbas, and tuned gongs).
Kalonica is a multi-award winner drummer from the Isle of Java, making her a perfect match concerning the traditional folk aspects for the drum parts, which use traditional Indonesian music scales, and were written entirely in quintuplets; (a quintuplet is a grouping of five sixteenth notes, that occur within the span of one quarter note).
Kalonica’s fiery drum performance, and Gerry Joe’s orchestral composing, were both inspired by Javanese gamelan folk music; and Anika Nilles (Jeff Beck) take on drumming with quintuplets. As well as Claude Debussy’s influenced compositions with gamelan music.
Gary Husband drummer for John Mclaughlin, Alan Holdsworth, Jeff Beck, and Gary Moore; described the Sinfonietta as “a compelling composition by Gerry Joe Weise, constantly unraveling in new variations”, and added “featuring a fascinatingly created drum set part performed so wonderfully by Kalonica Nicx”. While David Levine, Executive Director of the Hit Like A Girl contest, describes it as an “incredible solo performance” for the Sinfonietta, and another reason why “Kalonica is a 3-Time International Champion of the HLAG”.
Endorsed by TAMA Drums in Indonesia, Kalonica is an uprising YouTube Star with several of her videos reaching well over a million views each, where she created exciting drum parts from Guns N’ Roses, to Santana via Boney M.
